Modern Warfare 4 Developer Infinity Ward Addresses Gunny AI Chatbot Claim

by 17 July 202600

Infinity Ward has hit again at claims the brand new Gunsmith for Name of Obligation: Modern Warfare 4 options an AI chatbot.

Modern Warfare 4’s Gunsmith consists of Gunny, a brand new function designed to assist gamers rapidly create builds based mostly on their playstyle and unlocked attachments. Infinity Ward has stated it options weapon builds developed by the studio’s Weapons Group, and might immediately configure close-, mid-, or long-range builds tailor-made to completely different approaches to fight. In a blog post, Activision stated Gunny “brings a Gunnery Sergeant’s eye to weapon customization.”

The brand new function hit the headlines after a screenshot of Modern Warfare 4 displaying the brand new Gunsmith person interface went viral on social media. Within the picture, we see Gunny “converse” to the participant through textual content paying homage to the form of dialogue we’re now used to seeing from the likes of ChatGPT.

“Hiya, I will help you construct a weapon when you will have extra attachments unlocked,” Gunny says. “Hold leveling your weapon.” You may press RT to entry Gunny from Gunsmith.

Followers picked up on this instantly and expressed concern, with some joking it that Gunny was Name of Obligation’s tackle Microsoft’s animated paperclip assistant, Clippy. “Genuinely what’s one upside to having an AI assist construct your gun,” requested one fan. “Some responses had been significantly aggressive. “Should you’re allowed to speak with Gunny, I’m solely telling it to shoot itself within the face,” one particular person stated. “You can not go actually anyplace within the digital world with out these assholes shoving this ineffective s**t down our throats.”

Infinity Ward stepped in when former Name of Obligation leaker TheGhostOfHope joined the complaints in a post on X / Twitter: “They received an AI chatbot within the sport now to assist mfs with their loadouts as if it’s not the identical s**t used yearly.”

That, it appears, was sufficient to spark Infinity Ward into motion. In a reply, the developer insisted Gunny presents developer-tuned setups for fast loadout swaps between matches.

“Incorrect (once more.)” Infinity Ward stated.

“Gunny is hand crafted by our builders, not AI. It recommends builds based mostly on the attachments you’ve unlocked for every weapon. It helps make fast loadout adjustments between matches.

“Give it a shot within the Beta.”

As you may in all probability collect by Infinity Ward’s “flawed (once more),” response, there’s a little bit of needle between Activision and TheGhostOfHope. TheGhostOfHope is well-known within the Name of Obligation group for leaks, a few of which Activision has referred to as out as flawed prior to now. For instance, in February, TheGhostOfHope claimed that “sources” had indicated that Activision deliberate to launch a standalone Zombies sport. That declare prompted an official response from the Name of Obligation account, which poured chilly water on the “leak.” “The rumor manufacturing facility working additional time. This ain’t it,” the account said.

Then, in March, Activision demanded TheGhostOfHope cease releasing confidential details about the sequence, insisting that even when leaks are flawed they trigger issues. TheGhostOfHope agreed, though has continued to touch upon Name of Obligation typically.

Whereas Gunny might not be an AI chatbot precisely, Activision has come below fireplace prior to now for its use of AI within the Name of Obligation sequence. The video games firm used generative AI to construct in-game belongings for each Black Ops 6 and seven, and was referred to as out by followers for Black Ops 6’s notorious six-fingered zombie Santa.

Name of Obligation: Modern Warfare 4 launches throughout Xbox Collection X and S, PlayStation 5 and PC through Battle.internet, Xbox on PC, Steam, and Nintendo Swap 2 on Friday, October 23, 2026.
