Eidos-Montréal’s much-loved Deux Ex prequel collection famously ended on a cliffhanger with Mankind Divided, irritating followers. Now, they know precisely what they missed out on.
Throughout an episode of the From Script to Life podcast, Human Revolution and Mankind Divided author Mark Cecere mentioned the place protagonist Adam Jensen’s story would have gone in the third recreation, had been it not canceled. The writers deliberate for Jensen to take out one member of the Illuminati slightly than the Illuminati itself, which might have triggered “Bob Web page to develop into Bob Web page.”
Bob Web page is the antagonist of the authentic Deus Ex recreation, Ion Storm’s vastly influential 2000 cyberpunk journey. So, on this approach, Jensen’s destiny is to trigger Deux Ex.
“He can by no means catch up to the Illuminati,” Cecere defined. “We all know this. We all know the Illuminati preserve going till 2050. We all know a few of those self same characters which are in the Illuminati inside circle are in 2050. So Jensen can by no means get there and do one thing concrete.
“So, what can occur? That was the query we had been attempting to reply in some unspecified time in the future. So we did have one title that we might eliminate, and that was the one which Jensen would have caught up to and performed one thing.
“The repercussions had been that by Jensen doing this, it causes Deus Ex, if that is sensible. And that’s the tragedy of Jensen, is that he causes what occurs after — by doing one thing — he causes Bob Web page to develop into Bob Web page. That was the place we had been heading.”
Sadly, it appears unlikely we’ll ever get to see this model of occasions. After the launch of Mankind Divided in 2016, earlier proprietor Sq. Enix had Eidos-Montréal shift to different tasks, together with 2021’s Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy. Then, in 2022, Sq. Enix offered Eidos-Montréal and the Deus Ex franchise to controversial umbrella firm Embracer. Work on a model new Deus Ex recreation had already begun, however this too was canceled in 2024, leading to signifcant layoffs at Eidos-Montréal.
At the time, Elias Toufexis, who performed Adam Jensen, waved goodbye to the character seemingly for good, saying: “alas, his story appears performed.” Whereas Toufexis confirmed he had not labored on this newest canceled Deus Ex recreation and expressed hope that one other firm may decide up the Deus Ex licence, it felt closing.
Now, reacting to Cecere’s comments, Toufexis said: “Hey this could have been enjoyable huh?”
