Campaign Evolved on Steam Deck

by 25 July 2026016

Halo: Campaign Evolved is principally already right here in case you pay the early entry tax, and whereas it does look unimaginable on high-end gaming PCs and current-generation consoles, it struggles exhausting on lower-end {hardware}, notably handheld gaming PCs. I spent a bit little bit of time taking part in the remake on the Xbox Ally, and, effectively, the unique Halo marketing campaign seems an entire lot higher within the Grasp Chief Assortment.

It should not be too shocking that Campaign Evolved would not run tremendous effectively on low-end handhelds just like the Steam Deck. The sport calls for no less than an Intel Core i7-10700K and an Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060 Tremendous, each of that are extra highly effective than the equivalents discovered within the base Xbox Ally and the Steam Deck. However, for some motive, the Steam web page for the sport says the sport is Steam Deck Verified.

So as to run the sport on the Xbox Ally, I set the decision to 1280×720 and set it to the Very Low preset, with FSR set to Low. With these settings, I am getting a fairly playable 30 fps, with occasional dips all the way down to the mid 20s. That is in all probability why the sport skated by with a Steam Deck Verified label, I’ve seen video games carry out worse and nonetheless get that inexperienced checkmark.

However whereas the sport is playable at these settings, it is genuinely an eyesore. So as to maintain the framerate up, visible constancy is low, textures are solely bland, and vegetation and different environmental objects are just about nonexistent. Plus, the upscaling at this decision makes the sport appear to be a blurry, staticky mess on high of all of that lack of element.

And whereas there are some parts of the sport that also look alright, specifically partitions and different objects having a bit extra element to them, Halo simply seems higher within the Grasp Chief Assortment, even when it seems like an older recreation (which it’s). Simply taking a look at these screenshots from the second mission while you’re combating off a bunch of Covenant reinforcements, the Campaign Evolved screenshot has a just about flat atmosphere, with a blurry Elite being shot at. Within the Grasp Chief Assortment, the wall on the best would not look fairly nearly as good, however there’s really vegetation on the bottom, and the enemy being shot at would not appear to be as a lot of a blurry mess.

What makes this much more wild is the efficiency on supply. With these settings, the Grasp Chief Assortment is getting a stable 65-70 fps more often than not on the Xbox Ally, in comparison with 25-30 fps in Campaign Evolved. And remember that the Xbox Ally and the Steam Deck have extraordinarily comparable efficiency.

I like the unique Halo – there was a very good decade the place the one motive I stored a console in my home was to play Halo video games. So whereas I’ll completely be taking part in this new remake on a high-end PC or perhaps a extra highly effective handheld just like the MSI Claw 8 EX AI+, if you wish to play this authentic marketing campaign on the Steam Deck, simply obtain the Grasp Chief Assortment as an alternative.
