One of many authentic designers of Tomb Raider’s iconic Lara Croft has revealed that Core Design’s then-Japanese writer had requested for the character to be given a “Manga” redesign to “enchantment” to Japanese gamers.
Responding to one fan who had unearthed a remark from him a few years in the past, Tomb Raider co-creator and programmer Paul Douglas confirmed there had been a little stress “fairly late in Tomb Raider’s improvement” when writer Victor Interactive Software program “faxed over a few of their very own designs” over fears the western character design would not “go down properly” in Japan.

The tweet above originates from a related thread in 2021 through which Douglas explained: “I believe they simply assumed altering all of the fashions would solely take a few days of labor. It was early days of 3D… It began out as a request to change all of the in-game and cutscene fashions. Then simply in-game. Then simply Lara. Then simply Lara’s head…”
“This drawing from the Japanese guide is *maybe* all that continues to be…” Douglas added.
